Medieval mayhem, pogo dancing and playful rebellion turn a club protest into one of synthpop’s most memorable videos.More

Inspired by singer Ivan Doroschuk's experiences being ejected from clubs for pogo dancing, The Safety Dance transformed a simple protest into one of the most memorable music videos of the MTV era. This commentary explores how its medieval village setting, eccentric choreography, and whimsical characters reinforce the song's message of individuality and inclusion. It examines Doroschuk's commanding baritone, the ritual-like pulse of the drum machine, and the richer, more restrained synthesizer sound that distinguished the track from Men Without Hats' earlier material. The commentary also traces the band's signature blend of irony and absurdity, connecting their style to influences like Devo and Talking Heads while highlighting echoes in later synthpop acts. Along the way, it uncovers historical touches such as Punch and Judy theatre, explains the origins of pogo dancing, and shows how the video's seemingly chaotic celebration ultimately becomes a joyful invitation for everyone to dance their own way.
